This page is a bit old (May 2000), but I'll leave it here as a memory of my imperial sys-admin reign. :) And it's refreshing to see how much of this we accomplished.

  1. ECE Labs Computing Staff
    1. Prepay Printing System - gildor 5/15/2000
      1. Finish accounting system & internal tests 2 weeks
      2. Beta test accounting 1 week
      3. Move printing off ece ½ week
      • leon can take larger jobs - bigger spool
      • Seniors no longer escaping w/ unpaid print bills
      • Students can prepay in freshman year and avoid monthly nuissances
    2. Linux MS Windows Imaging - aaronl 5/15/2000
      1. Get Ghost to work under DOSEmu w/ auto partitioning 1 week
      2. Get Linux to boot root NFS via a kernel on floppy 1 week
      3. Get DOSEmu to work under NFS root 1 week
      4. Put Linux Kernel w/ boot menu on PC ½ week
        • Partitions: 5MB /boot, 128MB swap, 1MB Fat12/16, rest is Windows (NTFS, FAT32, etc...)
        • Boot menu: Windows, Linux, Format
      5. Create auto imaging system ½ week
      6. Evaluate Win2000 on lab machines (need to know capital allocation first) 1 week
        • Waiting on Samba-TNG for Win2000 support
          • Already has Unix account synchronization
          • Utilizes Unix's great flexibility & stability (ie can restart M$ Windows services w/ no rebooting, etc...)
        • Will probably not use Win2000 Server in server room
          • Would need to synchronize Win2000 & Unix accounts
          • General impression that M$ products are not as flexible as their marketing would have you believe
      7. Create A term images (Leave Linux unmodified for now) 1 week
      8. Evaluate possibility of Windows under VMware 1 week
      • Would allow imaging to any M$ operating system w/ no floppies
      • Reduce competition for Unix machines by allowing any lab computer to run either M$ Windows or Unix applications
    3. Customize Solaris - smyrph 5/15/2000
      1. Evaluate xdm & gdm ½ week
        • xdm appears to have Kerberos 5 support
      2. Install & customize xdm or gdm ½ week
      3. Evaluate FVWM & Enlightenment ½ week

      • CDE security issues no longer a concern
      • can better customize system wide defaults

      • Netatalk is to Mac what Samba is to M$ Windows
      • Would encourage Mac users to store more on their ECE home directories where it gets backed up
      • Can use to integrate Macs with print accounting
      • Resolves issues with printer Mac-name changes after resets
    11. Automate ECE web page headers & footers
      1. verify proper header & footer
      2. copy quickslv's html files over the main files
      3. purify html code - scour web pages and remove font tags and etc.
      • single point to adjust web styles, fonts, colors
      • web pages will be more compatible with browsers for people w/ disabilities
      • easier to implement wide-spread changes for special occasions like holidays
    12. fix finger
      • last stopped with GNU finger compile error
      • gildor compiled latest of GNU Finger 1.39a from alpha.gnu.org
    13. fix printer page counters
      • network protocol timeouts?
    14. Increase user awareness of the Unix systems
      1. install useful, up-to-date software packages
        1. install GNU Pascal compiler
        2. find latest sources of xgraph - jmhill
        3. using elmer.wpi.edu for this testing ground
      2. make shop's part list available online (convenience for students) db:parts.mdb
        1. shop db not reconcile MQP accounts properly
